The City Council has high ambitions for the library. The project Diagonale authored by architects Atelier Oslo and Lund Hagem was unanimously chosen as the winner. In 2008-2009, HAV Eiendom AS, executed a design competition for the New Oslo Public Library with adjacent areas in the so-called Deichman axis. In 2008 the municipality of Oslo made an option agreement with HAV Eiendom AS regarding the relocation for the Munch Museum and the Deichman Main library in Oslo. Since 1933, the main library has been located at Hammersborg. The Main Library houses the largest part of Deichman’s media collection and serves Deichman’s branches in Oslo and other libraries in Norway and abroad. Background The New Deichman Main library is the new main public library for the city of Oslo. The library is under construction and will open in 2020. The project is set in the newly developed harbour area Bjørvika, close to the Opera and Barcode. In 2009 Lund Hagem and Atelier Oslo won 1st prize in the open international competition for the new public library of Deichman in Oslo, with their proposal “Diagonale”.
